We're thrilled to hear that DEQ has denied the RDU AA permit for a proposed fence along large portions of Umstead State Park, the East Coast Greenway, and Crabtree Creek. This fence would have been an eyesore along one of the most heavily used recreation corridors in the Triangle. The fence plans also called for clear cutting a 30' wide path (15' either side of fence), and construction of patrol roads, for regular ATV patrols. We feel it would be totally inappropriate on the border of the park, and are delighted the permit was denied.
As the recent RDU AID task force report suggested, Umstead State Park is a beloved recreational asset of the region. We're hopeful RDU AA will be more sensitive to their neighboring park in future initiatives.
Here's the letter from DEQ denying the fence permit.
Here are more details on the proposed fence project.
