Dear everyone
Thank you to everyone for continuing to share the petition and to everyone who has signed the petition since the last udpate
I am thrilled that already 1000 people have already said NO to the demolition and confident that more and more people will sign the petition as they find out about the looming possibility that The Kingfisher is unnecessarily demolished before our very eyes
Please keep sharing the petition as widely as possible
Schools are now going back and it is an excellent opportunity to let parents know about the council's plans to deprive people perhaps permanently of the facilities offered by The Kingfisher Leisure Centre
I have checked the decision papers of the three Response and Recovery Committee Meetings in which council officers and councillors keep asserting that a commitment has been made to replace The Kingfisher Leisure Centre with new community facilities
Firstly, I find no such commitment
The only commitment is:
- to "assess" the possible redevelopment of The Kingfisher Site and to assess the business case for such a possible redevelopment ALONGSIDE that of the redevelopment of The Guildhall Complex
- to delegate authority to the Director of Corporate and Communities to approve any procurement strategies, in particular the replacement Kingfisher Leisure Centre
Secondly, the policy requirement to replace community facilities with new faciilities that are at least equal in quantity and quality has never been addressed
Now is the time to speak up against this plan to demolish a building simply because it needs a new roof when there is no assurance of what will happen when the building is gone
Sport England have opposed the demolition, so must we
Only we can stop this happening. Please tell everyone you can about the council's plans
