Blue catfish stocked at Raystown Lake
The Issue
Raystown lake is a great fishery. Many boaters and fishermen from around the United States come to Raystown lake to fish, camp, hike, bike, and enjoy other outdoor activities. Introducing another species of fish would draw more people to the lake. The introduction of blue catfish in the lake would not only benefit the fishery but would also bring more people to the lake. By doing this more businesses would profit, jobs would grow, balance of the lake would be better, and tournaments could be done at the lake. The proposal to have blue catfish stocked at Raystown lake would add another trophy species to the lake. With Raystown lake being the biggest lake solely in Pennsylvania not only is it big enough but would be a great place for them to be introduced. The lake is already stocked annually with Muskie, striped bass, lake trout, large mouth bass, and more. The lake has an over abundance of gizzard shad which would feed the blue catfish. Blue catfish are being stocked in the Allegheny River system this year 2022. They are in the lower Susquehanna River and both of these fisheries are thriving. Raystown lake already has channel catfish that are stocked in the lake. By adding blue catfish to the lake it would give people the opportunity to catch another trophy size fish along with striped bass and Muskie. Not only would this add another trophy fish to anglers but would add another target fish for guide services that make their livelihood off of the lake by adding to their services. Some guide services guide for a living. More jobs and more publicity for the lake in a positive way. Blue cats are native to Pennsylvania via the Ohio watershed same as bass. They are also in the lower Susquehanna river system but blocked from moving up because of dams.
