Rapido Discriminated Against Me Because Of My Disability

The Issue

I take the Rapido service almost every day while returning from the office to home. Just like another day, on September 17, 2022, I booked Rapido and Mr. Amar Dutta was allotted to provide the service . Initially, he told me to wait for 7 to 8 minutes. So, I was waiting for him. Suddenly, he called and said,

"Do you have any personal problems?"

I was surprised by his query!

I said, "Why are you asking so?"

He said, "Actually, on my login page it is showing that you have some physical problems. If any unfortunate thing happens to you, then I can’t take the responsibility for that."

I told him that "I was hearing this kind of thing for the first time as I have been using Rapido for a long time."
He replied that "if you have never heard, then hear it for the first time from my side and he disconnected the call immediately."

I was feeling so humiliated, discriminated against and insulted because the rider just refused to take me only for my blindness. His aggressive, inhuman, and unprofessional behaviour can hit the dignity of any human being. This kind of poisonous thought of these people is creating racism in our society.

I have sent the mail to the chief commissioner of persons with disabilities, the district magistrate of Darjeeling, and also lodged a complain against the person in Rapido. Rapido has contacted me and told me that they have permanently deactivated this person’s ID and he will never get employment in Rapido.

But I am not satisfied with Rapido’s response.

The apology letter that I've received, reads like an auto-generated, templated response that Rapido would send to a customer for any driver-related problem they face. They have refused to send me a proper apology expressly stating that I was discriminated against because of my disability. They've instead just informed me that the rider's ID has been suspended. I am also particularly alarmed by the fact that my Rapido rider got to know about my disability on his login page or on his personal ID. This is what he told me, and I have the call recording for the same.

  • Rapido should clarify whether its mobile application allows this kind of an interface where riders can share information about customers, based on which, the next rider may even discriminate against a customer, because of their disability.

When I wrote about this very humiliating incident in a comment to one of Rapido's Facebook posts, they replied saying they had added 30 coins to my wallet as a token of apology. 30 coins! Instead of a formal written apology and an explanation over how the Rapido rider came to know of my disability on his login page, I get 30 coins in my Rapido wallet!

Sign this petition so that Rapido issues a clarification about whether its riders are able to view the personal information of their customers and accordingly pick and choose whom to service. Why did my rider tell me that on "his login page", he could see that I, his next customer, had some "physical problems"?
