We Need Rape Kit Reform to Protect Our Children and Keep Predators in Prison

We Need Rape Kit Reform to Protect Our Children and Keep Predators in Prison
The Issue
Every two minutes someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. There are over 200,000 untested rape kits in the U.S. I am an Alabama citizen and the untested rape kit number at this time is unknown.
Everyone is impacted by sexual assault. You can be a victim, the family or friend of a victim, or just someone in the community that lives near a sex offender or unknown offender. Sexual assault does not discriminate. It happens to women, men, and children. It does not matter your age or race. Anyone can be a victim.
If Rape Kit Reform is implemented, testing can identify an unknown perpetrator; confirm the presence of a known suspect; affirm a survivor’s account of their assault; connect the suspect to other crime scenes, including those in other states and jurisdictions; help solve other cases that may not be sexual assaults; and exonerate the innocent. Most importantly, rape kit testing can bring justice.
Immediate action is needed to protect our children, our mothers, our sisters, our friends, and ourselves! If Rape Kit Reform is not implemented, we are all in danger of being victims of more crime including sexual assaults, violence, and drugs in our communities.
We are now beginning to see the impact that has come from the testing of rape kits. There have been thousands of serial rapists identified.
In Detroit alone, there were 11,341 untested rape kits found dating back to 1984.
So far, they have been able to close 4,800 cases and have secured another 239 convictions. Another 841 serial offenders have been identified.
Our survivors deserve better than this! Our survivors deserve Justice! We all deserve and are entitled to be protected! Help me get predators off the streets and make our communities a safer place.
