Rape Epidemic in India

The Issue

I am a woman from India. Like countless others in my country, I have experienced sexual harassment. This is not an isolated experience, but a daily reality for many women in India. Every woman in India has faced harassment in some form during their lifetime - a fact that is alarming and unacceptable.

It's high time we demanded legal structures to protect women and mitigate these issues.

Firstly, marital rape needs to be criminalized to create a civilized society where married women are not deprived of their human rights anymore. The NFHS revealed that 82% of married men were sexually violent with their wives, as were 13.7% of former husbands, making spousal sexual violence a pressing concern.

In addition, we need to implement strict anti-dowry and domestic violence laws. More than 6000 women were brutally murdered in India in 2022 over dowry demands as per the National Crime Records Bureau, India. Hundreds of thousands more were tortured physically and emotionally. These stringent laws would act as a deterrent to such heinous practices.

Furthermore, we need stringent Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) practices and protocols in every office and workplace to provide a safe environment for women.

We are in desperate need of unambiguous harassment laws for public places. It's nearly impossible for women to travel alone at night and not get molested. Not that travelling during daytime is completely safe.

To make this easier, every phone should have an easily accessible app to report instances of sexual harassment.

Individually, these changes would help. Together, they have the potential to transform women's lives in India. We invite you to raise your voice against such atrocities and injustice. Please sign this petition and take a stand for the protection and rights of women in India.
