💚Raising awareness and support for individuals with autism💚
The Issue
I'm Conahleigh Clarke, and this issue is close to my heart. Two loved ones in my family, my nephews who have autism, have been victims of the systemic lack of available and suitable services in the New Ferry area. In our quest for social involvement options tailored to the needs of young adults with autism, we've fallen prey to vulnerability and desperation. One of my nephews found himself caught up with online scammers, a result of his desperate search for services and community. Threatened and blackmailed, he could not express his discomfort due to his condition.
The lack of social and emotional support for autistic individuals in our community is exposing them to dire threats, and it is time for this situation to improve. Autism affects around 1 in 59 children, and it is no longer a condition we can afford to ignore or underserve (source: CDC). As these children grow up, they need services that address their unique needs and challenges throughout their lives.
We urge the local council and health departments to establish programs and services that validate the experiences and meet the needs of our young adults with autism. Our community deserves a safe, understanding environment that respects diversity and promotes inclusivity.
Sign this petition to send a message to our local leaders—a request and demand for action towards the creation of much-needed services for young adults with autism in the New Ferry area.
