The issue

Australia is in a cost of driving crisis.

We need new vehicle standards and more efficient vehicles to help everyday Australians spend less on fuel and more time driving the cars they love.

The Australian Government is introducing New Vehicle Efficiency Standards that will apply to all new cars, vans and utes. Vehicle manufacturers will have to bring a range of more efficient options. This will include hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars, as well as more efficient modern combustion engines.

What are the benefits of Standards?

  1. Standards mean more fuel-efficient options that use less petrol.
  2. Motorists can save over $1,000 a year on petrol under standards because new vehicles will be more efficient.
  3. Utes, vans and SUVs will be available and more efficient than ever.
  4. Reduced emissions—transport is Australia’s second largest source of greenhouse gas pollution, making up 18% of Australia’s annual greenhouse gas pollution.
  5. Less imported oil means less money going to big petrol companies and more money staying in Australian energy and minerals.

Help us get standards passed into law so that every Aussie driver can save on fuel. Sign your name to tell the Government you support the New Vehicle Efficiency Standards that will raise the quality of vehicles imported into Australia and help Aussie drivers save on fuel.

How would the Standards work?

  • New Vehicle Efficiency Standards apply to international car manufacturers, not to dealerships or consumers.
  • Standards affect only new cars, utes, vans and SUVs. They don’t apply to existing or used vehicles. They also don’t apply to heavy trucks or motorbikes.
  • Vehicle manufacturers are assigned a target each year for the average carbon pollution per kilometre produced by the new vehicles they sell.
  • There are two targets: larger and heavier vehicles like utes and 4x4s will have a higher emissions target, while smaller and lighter cars will have a lower target.
  • Vehicle manufacturers can still sell a broad range of vehicles and meet targets in the best way for them. They can balance out the vehicles they sell with more efficient and less efficient models. They can sell a mix of petrol, hybrid, plug in or electric.
