Currently, the age of consent in the United States varies between 16 and 18 years, depending on the state. However, considering that the average age of adolescents' mental maturity reaches its peak at around 18 years (according to the American Psychological Association), it is crucial that we legally align sexual consent age with mental maturity. As such, we propose raising the federal age of consent for sex to 18 years across all US states. We must take into account the vulnerable position of minors and, as a society, work to protect them. An exception would be applied in the case of partners within a year's age difference, considering the nature of teenage relationships. By modifying this legal standard, we can help ensure safer, consensual relationships among young people. Please sign the petition to protect our youth.
