The Issue

Our teachers are the backbone of our community’s future. We work tirelessly to educate, inspire, and support our children, often going above and beyond our job descriptions. However, far too many of us are doing so while struggling to make ends meet. The current salaries for educators in Dorchester District 2 do not reflect the importance of our work, nor do they provide a livable wage that allows us to sustain a decent quality of life in our region.

The cost of living in Dorchester County—and the greater Charleston area—has risen significantly in recent years. Housing costs, utilities, groceries, and transportation have all become more expensive, yet teacher salaries in Dorchester District 2 have not kept pace. This financial strain forces many educators to take second jobs or leave the profession altogether, creating instability in our schools and affecting student achievement. Many teachers are willing to teach an additional class in order to stay in Dorchester District 2 and make a livable wage; however, even this opportunity is being taken away from high school teachers.

Furthermore, surrounding districts such as Charleston and Berkeley counties are offering more competitive pay and incentives. Without comparable compensation, Dorchester District 2 risks falling even further behind in recruiting and retaining highly qualified teachers. Our students deserve access to excellent educators, and we must ensure our schools are attractive workplaces for the professionals who dedicate their lives to this mission.

Raising teacher pay is not just a financial decision—it is a moral and strategic imperative. Investing in our teachers is investing in the future of Dorchester County. SIGN AND SHARE THIS PETITION WITH YOUR FELLOW TEACHERS AND CONTACT YOUR COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS!
