A few days ago Ofsted met with the Health Conditions in School Alliance to discuss our campaign. And though it’s early days, I think it went pretty well.
The Alliance charities took some of the comments you left after signing this petition, and showed Ofsted there was a real problem. And Ofsted agreed there was more they could do.
For a start, right now there’s not much Ofsted guidance for school inspectors on how to check schools have the right medical conditions policies to keep children like my daughter safe. But following this meeting, Ofsted have agreed to review how they train and instruct their inspectors.
And in another big move, Ofsted have promised to write to the Department of Education, and ask the Minister to make it an explicit legal requirement that all schools publish their medical conditions policy on their website.
If these changes happen (and it is still an ‘if’), they would be huge. Far fewer children would suffer in the way Jenny has. Lives could be saved.
If having a policy on the website was a legal requirement, inspectors would have to check one is in place every time they visit a school. And by giving inspectors more guidance on what they should be checking for, they will know exactly what questions to ask and what makes a good policy.
I’m not getting too excited just yet as there’s a long way to go. But it must be a positive that Ofsted are considering changing their training, and even asking for legal changes.
I don’t think Ofsted would even be considering any of this if it wasn’t for the 7000+ of you that signed this petition, so thank you all so much. We need to keep up the pressure though so please keep sharing the petition wherever and whenever you can!
