La Cabalgata de Reyes de Alcoi de España, una de las festividades más identificativas de la ciudad, es la manifestación más ofensiva y violenta de blackface en Europa.

La práctica de la Cabalgata ya no es tolerable en su forma tradicional y necesita una TRANSFORMACIÓN urgente hacia algo nuevo, una versión contemporánea positiva de la celebración, que proporcione alegría a niños y adultos sin racismo, que incluya a todos y esté libre de estereotipos racistas. Por esto te pedimos que firmes y compartas nuestra petición para poner fin al black face en la cabalgata de Alcoy. 

En Alcoi es donde se festeja la Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos más antigua de España con una índole racista a través de la representación de los pajes, los ayudantes de los Reyes. Es urgente repensar, rediseñar y actualizar el aspecto de los pajes justamente para que la fiesta pueda ser profundamente un acto cultural contemporáneo, libre de cualquier crítica, y culta.

El problema radica en que los pajes están pintados y vestidos como una burda parodia de los esclavos negros de la época colonial: un blackface con labios rojos de cientos de ciudadanos alcoyanos que recorren las calles de Alcoi cada año. A esto se suma que ha sido la imagen del paje la que ha trascendido como uno de los iconos culturales de la ciudad y se ha generado un gran volúmen de merchandising que inunda las calles y balcones durante un largo período de tiempo, llenando la ciudad de blackfaces por doquier.

La tradición del blackface en fiestas culturales en los últimos años ha desvelado un racismo profundamente arraigado también en los Países Bajos, en el caso de la fiesta de Santa Claus, Sinterklaas en Holanda, donde su ayudante, llamado Negro Pete, exhibe también un blackface.

La polémica sobre el Negro Pete se ha convertido en el pararrayos de las crecientes tensiones culturales en los Países Bajos - tensiones que a su vez han puesto al descubierto la xenofobia y el conservadurismo profundamente arraigado en esta sociedad supuestamente progresista y multicultural.

Vemos un claro paralelismo entre la negativa de gran parte de los holandeses a no querer reconocer el evidente racismo porque ellos mismos se consideran anti-racistas en la reacción de muchos ciudadan@s alcoian@s que se empeñan en justificar la figura de los pajes con el cariño y simpatía que la ciudadanía muestra por ellos y a no querer identificar la fiesta como racista por conflicto identitario.

En un momento en el que mundialmente se debate sobre el racismo aún imperante en nuestras sociedades - debido a acontecimientos como, por ejemplo en Estados Unidos la muerte de George Floyd y muchos otros; en un momento en el que en muchos países los partidos y movimientos de extrema derecha ganan territorio; en un momento en el que se debate la herencia del colonialismo y los museos se ven envueltos en discusiones sobre la devolución de arte robado de épocas coloniales pasadas; en un momento en el que innumerables refugiados de África se ahogan en el Mediterráneo intentando llegar a las costas de Europa - en un momento así, una práctica como la tradición en Alcoy no puede seguir siendo tolerada y necesita un cambio de actualización urgente.

A raíz de las revueltas y manifestaciones tras la muerte de George Floyd, el Parlamento Europeo declaró en una resolución el 19 de junio de 2020:

El Parlamento Europeo "16.  Pide a los Estados miembros que denuncien y se abstengan de las tradiciones racistas y afrofóbicas, como la práctica del blackface;"

No estamos en contra de la Cabalgata de Reyes de Alcoi, sino en contra de la representación de los pajes.

Es por esto que pedimos al ayuntamiento de Alcoi de transformar los pajes en una figura que nos respete a todos por igual.

El gobierno local podría contratar a los mejores escenógrafos y diseñadores de moda españoles para crear una nueva imagen de los pajes. O se podría convocar un concurso público en el que participara el público de Alcoi para buscar las mejores ideas para transformar el papel y el aspecto de los pajes con un valor simbólico contemporáneo.

Una figura tan representativa en la infancia de todos los niños de Alcoi debe albergar valores tan importantes como la igualdad como seres humanos, libre de estereotipos racistas.

The Cabalgata de Reyes in Alcoy in Spain, one of the city's most characteristic festivities, is the most offensive and violent blackface demonstration in Europe.

The practice of the Cabalgata is no longer tolerable in its traditional form and needs an urgent TRANSFORMATION into something new, a positive contemporary version of the celebration, providing joy for children and adults without racism, inclusive of all and free of racist stereotypes!

In Alcoy is where the oldest Three Kings' Parade in Spain is celebrated with a racist nature due to the representation of the “pajes”, the Kings' helpers. It is urgent to rethink, redesign and update the appearance of the “pajes”, precisely so that the festival can be a profoundly contemporary cultural event, free of any criticism, and cultured.

The problem lies in the fact that the “pajes” are painted and dressed as a crude parody of black slaves from colonial times: a massive blackface of hundreds of citizens from Alcoy who walk the streets of the city every year. In addition to this, it has been the image of the “paje” that has transcended into one of the cultural icons of the city and has generated a large volume of merchandising that floods the streets and balconies for a long period of time, filling the city with blackfaces everywhere.

The blackface tradition at cultural festivals in recent years has uncovered deep-seated racism in the Netherlands as well, in the case of Santa Claus, Sinterklaas in the Netherlands, where his helper, called Black Pete, also displays a blackface.

The Black Pete controversy has become a lightning rod for growing cultural tensions in the Netherlands - tensions that in turn have exposed the deep-seated xenophobia and conservatism in this supposedly progressive and multicultural society.

We see a clear parallel between the refusal of a large part of the Dutch to acknowledge the obvious racism because they themselves consider themselves anti-racist in the reaction of many Alcoyan citizens who insist on justifying the figure of the “pajes” with the affection and sympathy that the citizens show for them and not wanting to identify the festival as racist because of an identity conflict.

At a time when all the world debates about the still prevailing racism in our societies – due to events as e.g. in the United States the death of George Floyd and many others; at a time when in many countries parties and movements from the far right gain territory; at a time when the heritage of colonialism is debated and museums are involved in discussions about returning stolen art from past colonial times; at a time when countless refugees from Africa drown in the Mediterranean trying to get to the shores of Europe – at such a time a practice like the tradition in Alcoy can no longer be tolerated and needs urgent change.

Following the upheavals and demonstrations after the death of George Floyd, the European Parliament declared in a resolution on June 19th, 2020:

We are not against the Three Kings Parade in Alcoy, but against the representation of the “pajes”.

This is why we ask the town council of Alcoy to transform the “pajes” into a figure that respects all human beings equally.

The local government could hire the best Spanish scenographers and fashion designers to create a new image for the “pajes”. Or a public competition could be organised in which the public of Alcoy could participate to find the best ideas to transform the role and appearance of the “pajes” with a contemporary symbolic value.

Such a representative figure in the childhood of all the children of Alcoy should harbour such important values as equality of all human beings, free of racist stereotypes.
