In a time when colonial symbols are being re-examined, it makes sense to revamp flag rules that come from another era. Today is a prime example. Every year on Dec. 11, Ottawa orders all federal facilities to fly the British flag to mark our independence...from Britain!
On this day in 1931, Canada and Newfoundland took control of their own affairs from the UK. It’s been 90 years. But our public buildings are told to observe the anniversary with the flag of our former colonial ruler. The UK flag is lovely, but it’s not ours. And it’s wrong-headed to impose it on public properties, especially as a symbol of our sovereignty.
This is yet another reason to sign and share this petition, and have Ottawa bring its flag rules into the 21st century. The Canadian flag should be the only one used to mark this day, if it’s observed at all. With a new minister at Canadian Heritage (which issues the mandate), we have hope for change.
