Petition updatePut the Canadian flag firstFlag Day: 55 years of playing second fiddle

Today is Flag Day, the anniversary of the Canadian flag. When it was born this day, 55 years ago, an excited crowd had to wait for the Governor General to leave Parliament Hill so it could be hoisted atop the Peace Tower. As long as he was there, his personal flag prevented the Maple Leaf from being raised. And our flag has played second fiddle to royal and vice-regal flags ever since, some 30 in all--including the flag of disgraced Prince Andrew.

Let's give the Maple Leaf a birthday present we can all celebrate: having it take precedence before all other flags. That takes a simple change to the federal rule. No law needs to change. No Parliament needs to vote. No committee needs to research it. No poll needs to be taken. It's simple, it's logical, and it's patriotic. Let's finally put the Canadian flag first, above all.

If you've signed this petition already, thank you. Share your patriotism with others in your social networks so they, too, can add their voices. If you haven't signed, add your name. It's one thing you can do this Flag Day to honour our highest symbol on its birthday.
