Push for PMDD to Be Approved for Disability Benefits by the SSA
The Issue
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe, life-altering condition affecting millions of people. For 2 to 3 weeks every month, sufferers experience extreme physical and mental distress, including debilitating pain, fatigue, severe mood swings, and in many cases, suicidal thoughts. Despite the gravity of this condition, PMDD is not recognized as a qualifying disability by the Social Security Administration.
PMDD has been shown to be as disabling as conditions like chronic pain, fibromyalgia, depression, and anxiety. In fact, 34% of people with PMDD have attempted suicide due to the overwhelming symptoms they face. On average, it takes 12 years for someone with PMDD to receive an accurate diagnosis, leading to years of pain, loss of jobs, and even loss of life.
This petition calls on Congress and the Social Security Administration to officially recognize PMDD as a disabling condition so that those suffering can receive the support and resources they need to survive. We demand that PMDD be treated with the same seriousness and compassion as any other disabling condition.
No one should have to endure this suffering in silence. It’s time to make our voices heard and demand change.
Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to officially classify PMDD as a disability, ensuring that people living with this condition receive the benefits and support they deserve.
