Punish Bullying More Severely in Schools

The Issue

Having been bullied consistently throughout my childhood, across physical, verbal, cyber realms, and even socially outcast, I have personally experienced the devastating effects of bullying. Schools are unfortunately not doing enough to prevent or adequately address these cases. When I reported these issues to teachers, the responses were dishearteningly ineffective—often limited to forcing an apology from the bully without further consequences. This lack of meaningful action allows bullies to persist with their harmful behavior without fear of real repercussions.

I know firsthand the profound impact bullying can have on a child’s mental health, driving them into states of anxiety and depression. These experiences can shape their perspectives and confidence, negatively influencing their future. I attempted suicide and fell into depression due to the memories of bullying years after it happened, that is how bad bullying has affected me. No one should experience this. What’s most frustrating and concerning is that proving the severity of the bullying becomes a bureaucratic barrier that protects the school’s reputation rather than the students involved.

To bring about the necessary change, I propose that schools around the world should adopt a stricter set of consequences for bullying behavior. This includes comprehensive investigation processes for bullying accusations, mandatory bullying prevention programs involving both students and educators, and clear, enforceable disciplinary actions such as suspensions for offenders and even expulsion if severe. Parents of the offenders should also do something to teach their child the right behaviour. The government should encourage victims of bullying to stand up and call the police on bullies. This should be a punishable offence, such as giving a fine to the offender, or jail time depending on the age. Bullying can shape someone's life for the worse, causing them to become quite, anxious and depressed. Furthermore, ongoing support should be provided for victims, including counseling services and peer support groups.

If we do not take urgent action, we risk perpetuating a cycle where victims are unsupported and predators operate without punishment. I urge you to join me in advocating for these critical changes to school policies and disciplinary measures concerning bullying. Together, we can create a safer, more nurturing educational environment for future generations. Please sign this petition to ensure no other child endures the trauma and long-term effects of unchecked bullying.

No one should deserves to experience bullying.
