1.   In Pune, burning of garbage by municipal workers and private individuals, is accepted to be as one of the leading causes of air pollution. The garbage contains all types of waste including thermocol, paper, plastic, rubber and organic, which produces poisonous fumes and pollutants on burning, which are extremely harmful to the environment and to us. Especially in winter, this burning of garbage is the reason of causing of smog and increase in particulate matter in the air which will adversely affect lungs of the children, elderly and patients with serious respiratory disorders.

2.   We should learn our lesson from the terrible condition that Delhi is currently in, which was akin to 'living in a gas chamber' as per Delhi HC. Garbage burning is one of the reason for it happening. If we choose to wait till we reach that condition, it would be gross injustice that we would be doing on our young ones, elderly and the entire future generation.

3.  I would like to point out that the Bombay HC has already issued a notice to the state government on this issue.

I appeal to the Pune Municipal Corporation, Municipal Commissioner- Mr. Kunal Kumar and the Medical Officer (Health) - Mr. S.T. Pardeshi to take note of this and put an end to burning of garbage in the city.
