Hansard, 3 March 2016, Senate transcript, p24, 25 McDevitt, CEO ASADA: "Frankly, this stuff about thymomodulin—the 'good' thymosin—was shown to be absolute rubbish" Exhibit H: On 18 April 2013 ABC’s 7.30 Report, Reporter Caro Meldrum-Hanna broadcast and published a report including a series of text messages spanning more than six months between Steve Dank and Melbourne's club doctor, Dan Bates. The discussions are scientific, detailed and contradict what Melbourne has publicly said to date. The messages begin in mid-2012 when Dank offered his services to Bates. DAN BATES TO STEVE DANK: "Sorry, are you still up? Trengove is not going to Darwin, so I don't need the thymomodulin for tomorrow." ………... STEVE DANK TO DAN BATES: "When will we start Jack Trengove on the AOD?" DAN BATES TO STEVE DANK: "Tomorrow. Where can I get him to pick it up from?" STEVE DANK TO DAN BATES: "The Pharmacy. Tell him to ring me and he can meet me there." CARO MELDRUM-HANNA Notes: "The pharmacy" refers to the Como Compounding Pharmacy, here in Melbourne's South Yarra where Dank sourced his supplements. DAN BATES TO STEVE DANK: "... when can we book guys for the injections? We will need to give them times. Dan." STEVE DANK TO DAN BATES: "Saturday is fine. Organise him to meet me at the Pharmacy. Yes, we can book the guys. ... We will do the guys Sunday." CARO MELDRUM-HANNA: Two days later, a date was set. DAN BATES TO STEVE DANK: "Mate, what is the final word on the injections? I have players calling me for confirmation. Dan. Just make it Thursday to save hassle and more cancellations. Cheers, Dan." STEVE DANK TO DAN BATES: "OK, Thursday it is." CARO MELDRUM-HANNA: By January 2013, in the leadup to the start of the playing season, Dank was a regular at the Demons training ground. Another player referred to in the texts is star ruckman Mark Jamar. STEVE DANK TO DAN BATES: "Did you get on to Mark Jamar?" DAN BATES TO STEVE DANK: "Yep." CARO MELDRUM-HANNA: Around this time, Dank also told Dr Bates he had consulted with ASADA. STEVE DANK TO DAN BATES: "Sorry, mate, in a meeting. Spoke to ASADA. No problems. They will confirm by email. No issues their end." DAN BATES TO STEVE DANK: "Excellent." CARO MELDRUM-HANNA: The texts show Dank and Dr Bates discussed a wide range of substances, including AOD9604, cerebrolysin and thymomodulin. None of these substances are specifically banned by ASADA. Points to note 1: Thymomodulin, the good Thymosin Points to note 2: Como Compounding Pharmacy Note on witnesses: Witness #1 is Jobe Watson, Former Captain of the Essendon Football Club - Signed an affidavit stating he was given Thymomodulin, the good thymosin. Witness #2 is Dean Robinson, Essendon Football Club Fitness Coach - Discussed Thymomodulin also known as Thymosin; he stated he had never heard of Thymosin Beta 4 Witness #3 is Dr Peter Fricker OAM, a former director of the Australian Institute of Sport who at the AFL Anti Doping Tribunal on p490/491 confirm Dank was using Thymomodulin by stating "The immune one, yes, I think there may have been some mention of that" in a meeting in May 2012. Witness #4 is David Kenley OAM chief executive of Metabolic Pharmaceuticals who met Dank in November 2012 and stated “I am absolutely sure it was Thymomodulin. That is something that stuck in my head. I had never heard of Thymosin Beta-4 until this whole thing blew up.’’ Witness #5 James Hird. Former player and coach, Essendon Football Club stated “I’ve seen records of players having taken thymomodulin," he said on Fox Footy's AFL 360. Witness #6. Mark Thompson. Former player, assistant and coach, Essendon Football Club, stated he had seen a spreadsheet with "Thymomodulin" as a heading, listing players' names and when they received doses. "[It showed] week one, week two and when they had it," Witness #7 Simon Madden. Former player and Essendon Football Club Board Member stated “I’ve joined the board after this happened so I wanted to educate myself on it, so rather than making a knee jerk reaction like a lot of people do, I wanted to find the truth and there were four things given to the players which were all above board….” More to come.
