Psychiatry has had a lot of bad ideas in the past. Frontal lobotomy’s and  the cure for female madness was to make a women stay in bed for weeks while fed pablum. These are a couple of examples. 

Giving patients mind altering, powerful psychotropic drugs and asking them to monitor themselves is right in there with these bad ideas. We can do better…we need a plan. Patients can’t always dial 988 when they’re experiencing psychosis and their mind has been hijacked by a drug. These drugs can cause hallucinogenic, compulsive behaviours and people are harmed or die.

My name is ____________ and I am emailing in support of the House of Commons petition number 441-01652 also known as Madi’s Law. I believe that a psychotropic drugs safety waiver is urgently needed in Canada to prevent harm and save lives. I believe 

A mandatory psychotropic drugs safety waiver should be signed when a patient in Canada is given a psychotropic drug they have never taken before;

These drugs are powerful and mind-altering;

There is no scientific way of knowing how a patient will respond; and

A safety waiver would ensure that at least one caregiver is notified so they can help monitor the patient for adverse reactions such as suicidal ideation until such a time that it's deemed safe for the patient to take the drug

Many have been harmed or died. Please prevent deaths like Madisyn Solomon’s and legislate the use of a psychotropic drugs safety waiver in Canada ASAP. Canadians deserve safer mental health practices. Thank You.
