I want to make it clear that this waiver is for patients starting a new psychotropic drug. Once it's established that the drug is the right one and working for the patient they are good to go.
I would most definitely leave it to the health care professionals to decide the best way of implementing it.
It can take multiple attempts with psychotropic drugs before the patient finds the one that works. Counselling a patient to monitor themselves is not feasible. These drugs are powerful and mind altering. It's not practical to ask a patient to be responsible when they're taking something that can potentially make them irresponsible. This is a dangerous practice. We need this waiver. It's common sense to have a caregiver in place for safety.
