The Issue

In the interim while we make the transition to police free schools, we support the School Justice PSD Recommendations for the SRO Program

On Tuesday, June 23, the Poudre School District Board will sign a new contract with the Fort Collins Police Department to put police in our schools for one more year.  Those police cost our school district nearly $1 million dollars a year, at a time when our schools have no money.

There is a better way to provide services to students

There is a better way to provide safety in our schools

We feel that SROs must be eliminated from our schools for these reasons:

·        Approximately 25% of the students in Poudre School District are students of color

·        Nearly 50% of the students referred to law enforcement or disciplined in Poudre School District are students of color.

·        Data shows that Police in schools do not increase school safety.

·        Police in schools increase fear and mistrust among students of color.

·        Police in schools leads to racial profiling of students.

·        Police in schools results in violations of procedural and civil rights of students.

·        Police in schools leads to the criminalization of students.

·        Police in schools leads to more suspensions, expulsions and legal actions against students of color.

·        There are many alternatives to having police in schools.
