PS139Q | Request for FREE Beacon Afterschool at our School!
The Issue
Hi Parents,
We recently connected with CB6 regarding the education budget request for the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), which is due at the end of the month for the 2027 fiscal year. We understand that the 21st Century Grant currently held by Commonpoint, which provides free after-school programs, is set to expire that same year. This puts hundreds of families in our school at risk of losing access to these essential programs.
Our parents rely on these free after-school opportunities to support their families. As Commonpoint will need to reapply for the 21st Century Grant in 2026 as the contract nears expiration, it is crucial that we explore additional free options. One viable solution is to bring a Beacon Program to our school.
Beacon Programs have been successfully implemented in other schools across the city, providing not only free after-school care but also enriching experiences that foster learning, creativity, and community engagement.
These programs offer:
- Academic support and tutoring
- Arts, music, and cultural programs
- Sports and recreational activities
- Leadership and career readiness programs
- Family and community engagement initiatives
It’s important to note that grants are not guaranteed or secured funding—they require renewal and reapplication, which can result in gaps or loss of services. Beacon Programs, however, are city-funded, giving our school a more stable and sustainable source of support for years to come.
By securing a Beacon Program, we can ensure that our children continue to have access to safe, structured, and enriching after-school opportunities.
We urge parents to support this initiative by signing our petition below to advocate for after-school coverage at our school. These programs are not only vital for childcare but also play a key role in broadening our children’s experiences and opportunities.
Thank you for your support in keeping these essential programs available for our families. Please support us in sustaining these vital after-school programs.
