PS/MS 84 students need outdoor space to play! NYC Parks Department recently closed William Sheridan Playground for much-needed, much-desired reconstruction and improvements that will take a year to complete. This has left our school with no outdoor space to hold recess and gym class, leaving students confined to classrooms for the entire school day. The reconstruction of William Sheridan Playground was originally slated to begin in early 2020. At that time PS/MS 84 had successfully applied for a Play Streets permit for South 1st Street between Wythe Avenue and Berry Street. The pandemic delayed the reconstruction until now. Our school swiftly reapplied for a Play Streets permit, but the application is stuck in procedural limbo. Kids need space to play TODAY! Please sign this petition to expedite the approval of our Play Streets permit!

  This issue of not having space is very, very urgent, one that directly affects student wellness! As we all know these pandemic years have been extremely painful for children, depriving them of social interaction and hindering emotional development. Recess is one of the few opportunities students have to freely engage with peers. The loss of this vital unstructured time further exacerbates the trauma students have experienced, deprives students of physical recreation, and causes unnecessary harm.
