Provincial Park Status for Duncan River Ancient Cedars

Provincial Park Status for Duncan River Ancient Cedars
The Issue
Our goal is Provincial Park status for a minimum of 531 hectares at the North End of Duncan Lake Reservoir. This area encompasses one of the largest groves of ancient trees left in the BC Interior and consists of 395 hectares of forest and 136 hectares of wetlands.
(NOTE: DO NOT DONATE THROUGH CHANGE.ORG. Change.org has taken in more than $10,000 in donations as the result of this petition. NONE OF THIS goes to saving trees. This is appalling.)
There are many trees in this grove that are well over 1000 years old. The largest known tree (pictured) has been estimated to be over 2000 years old by Craig Pettitt from the Valhalla Wilderness Society.
The size of the park we are asking for includes the bare minimum amount of buffer area of currently unprotected younger forests adjacent to the ancient forest that is necessary for maintaining wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Right now, there is road building and logging planned immediately above this area. It is past time to stop the encroachment on this spectacular place.
While these huge ancient trees are not facing an imminent threat of logging, they deserve permanent protection and must be taken out of the Forest Service and put into Parks. The NDP has not created a single new Provincial Park since coming into office over 5 years ago. It is time for this to change. We are calling on the NDP government to step up its habitat preservation game and turn this extraordinary forest into a Provincial Park.
