The Issue

Currently, many public buildings in Sacramento lack adequate wheelchair access, which severely impacts the ability of disabled community members to fully participate in community life. This issue is not just a matter of convenience but a fundamental right, and it's imperative that we take steps to ensure all public spaces are accessible to everyone, regardless of mobility issues.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), public entities are required to provide accessible facilities and accommodations for individuals with disabilities. However, a number of public buildings in Sacramento still are not compliant, leaving wheelchair users and others with mobility challenges unable to access essential services and participate in civic activities. This lack of accessibility denies them the independence and equality that is their right.

Implementing wheelchair ramps and ensuring all facilities are accessible not only supports those with physical disabilities but also reflects our commitment to inclusivity and equality. By doing so, we promote a more inclusive environment where everyone can contribute to and benefit from the community.

We urge the Sacramento City Council and local government officials to prioritize funding and resources to modify and upgrade public buildings, ensuring they are ADA compliant. This includes installing ramps, elevators, and other necessary facilities that cater to the needs of people with disabilities.

With Sacramento being known for its vibrant community life, it is essential that all residents, regardless of their physical limitations, be able to access public spaces with ease. Let's uphold the principles of democracy and equality by ensuring that public buildings serve all citizens effectively.

Please sign this petition to advocate for the immediate action needed to bring all Sacramento public buildings up to accessibility standards, ensuring everyone can participate fully in community life.
