The Issue

Since becoming a parent three years ago, I have had to navigate the complex world of hospitals with my two children, both of whom have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). My eldest daughter (diagnosed with cerybral palsy and other neurosurgical issues), in particular, has had multiple hospital stays, the longest stretching over six weeks post NICU discharge. During these times, the inadequacies of the standard hospital beds became glaringly clear; they failed to provide her with the comfort or safety that every child deserves.

Children with SEND often require unique accommodations that are not typically available in standard hospital settings. Hospital stays for these children, already a trying time, become even more challenging without the necessary support and facilities. A core aspect that can significantly improve their experience is the provision of safespace beds. These beds are specially designed to ensure safety, comfort, and a calming environment for children who may be at risk of injury or distress.

Unfortunately, despite the critical need, the availability of such specialized beds in UK children's hospitals is insufficient. This lack of resources not only affects the well-being of the children but also places tremendous emotional and mental strain on their families. It is long overdue for policy changes to be implemented to address this urgent issue.

I am calling on the UK government and health authorities to prioritize the needs of children with SEND by making it mandatory for all children’s hospitals to have at least six safespace beds. Furthermore, essential funding must be allocated to facilitate this change, ensuring that hospitals are not burdened financially but can instead focus on providing optimal care for these vulnerable children.

The benefits of this initiative are plentiful. Safespace beds can significantly reduce anxiety and physical risks for children, enhance their hospital experience, and allow medical staff to focus effectively on treatment without concerns of the child's safety becoming a diversion.

Please join me in urging policymakers to invest in the health and safety of our children by signing this petition. Let us ensure that every child with SEND has a secure, comforting place during their hospital stay and show that we are committed to building an inclusive healthcare system for all.
