We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has signed and shared our petition. Reaching 1,309 signatures is an amazing achievement, and we are now sitting in the 3rd spot under Change.org’s Fuel Crisis Australia category.

However, the financial pressure on regional and country cancer patients is about to increase even further.

The final 16-cent-per-litre fuel excise relief ends at 11:59 pm on Sunday, 2 August 2026, with the full standard fuel tax rates returning from Monday, 3 August 2026. Diesel prices are tipped to rise closer to $3.00 per litre, creating another significant cost for people who have no choice but to travel long distances for cancer treatment, specialist appointments, scans, surgery and follow-up care.

While government travel assistance schemes such as PATS, VPTAS, PTSS and IPTAAS provide important support, many regional cancer patients still face substantial out-of-pocket costs. Fuel assistance often does not reflect the true cost of travelling hundreds — and sometimes thousands — of kilometres throughout a cancer journey.

For regional Australians, travelling for cancer care is not optional. It is a necessary part of accessing treatment.

This is why we continue to call for fairer, more realistic and better-indexed travel assistance that reflects rising fuel costs and the true financial burden experienced by regional and rural cancer patients.
