The Issue

The families of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, are facing a severe environmental and health crisis due to the presence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in their water supply. PFAS, often referred to as "forever chemicals," are synthetic compounds found in many industrial and consumer products. These chemicals have infiltrated our local water sources, posing significant health risks including cancer, liver damage, and developmental issues in children.

Affected households, many of which rely on well water, are unable to avoid these contaminants without external assistance. Tests have confirmed that PFAS levels in these homes exceed the safe thresholds of 4ppt set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Homes have tested as high as 725x the safe and legal limit. Over 40 homes are affected and the number continues to grow as testing and community awareness expands. This leaves families with an impossible choice: continue using contaminated water for their everyday needs, spend unsustainable amounts on bottled water, or pay maintenance fees on filtration systems.

We urge the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and local government officials to take immediate action to extend public water lines to the affected areas. Access to clean and safe tap water is not only a necessity but a fundamental right. Providing a public water connection would ensure the well-being of Bloomsburg residents and protect them from further exposure to these dangerous chemicals.

Implementing this solution requires a coordinated effort between state and local government, along with financial support at both levels. The government must prioritize funding for the expansion of the public water infrastructure, ensuring every household in Bloomsburg is free from the threat of PFAS contamination. Allocating resources to address this issue is a crucial step towards protecting public health and safeguarding our community's future.

Bloomsburg residents cannot face this challenge alone. They need our support to pressure the authorities to act swiftly and responsibly. Stand with us in demanding immediate government intervention to provide safe and clean public water to all affected households. Let us ensure that no family has to live in fear of the water that flows from their taps.

Sign this petition to urge our leaders to prioritize public health and provide safe drinking water for every family in Bloomsburg. Together, we can make a difference.
