Provide protection and aid for LGBTQ+ refugees in East Africa

Provide protection and aid for LGBTQ+ refugees in East Africa
The Issue
Am Ashley a queer refugee who has endured persecution, violence, and forced displacement simply for being who I am. Every day, I live in fear, representing over 400 LGBTQ+ refugees in East Africa who face daily threats, hunger, medical neglect, and the ever-present fear of death. This petition is a cry for survival, not only for myself but for the future of my community and those I have unfortunately buried along the way.
The plight of LGBTQ+ refugees in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and South Sudan, is dire and demands immediate action. These individuals face relentless discrimination, violence, and unrelenting fear of persecution solely due to their sexual orientation and gender identity. Despite fleeing their home countries in search of safety, they find themselves trapped in a cycle of neglect and abuse.
LGBTQ+ refugees often lack access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, and medical care. The shelters, meant to offer respite, become sites of further fear and violence. Existing humanitarian efforts fail to adequately address these unique challenges, leaving LGBTQ+ refugees vulnerable and marginalized.
Immediate protection, humanitarian aid, and resettlement pathways are essential to safeguarding the lives of these vulnerable groups. Expanding resettlement opportunities to safer countries where LGBTQ+ individuals can live freely is critical. The international community, governments, and aid organizations must act swiftly to create safe corridors for those trapped and to provide sustenance and medical support as a stop-gap measure.
Furthermore, strengthening legal frameworks to protect LGBTQ+ refugees within host countries like Kenya and South Sudan is imperative. Collaborative efforts between international and local entities can help foster a sanctuary for those who have endured so much simply for existing.
I urge you to stand with us in this fight for survival. We cannot afford to lose any more lives to hatred and neglect. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a future where everyone, regardless of their identity, can live without fear and with dignity. Together, we can bring about transformative change.
