Provide Lunch Trays For Students At Davies Tech
The Issue
As effective January 7th, 2024, William M Davies Jr. Career & Technical High School in Lincoln, RI, students will no longer receive lunch trays for sandwiches, pizza, and salad offerings, in place of small paper trays with only room for the one sandwich, and barely enough room for pizza. Only the hot lunch will include a tray. Much of the student body has complained about the fact that there is no room for milk, fruits, vegetables, or snacks.
Section 45A2 of Title 200 – Board Of Education, Chapter 20 – Council On Elementary And Secondary Education, Subchapter 25 – Student Health And Safety states that "In all menu-planning options, schools will offer each day, at a minimum, two (2) different fruits and/or vegetables at breakfast; three (3) different fruits and/or vegetables at lunch." With the replacement of trays with small paper dishes, students are not having enough to eat at lunch and are indirectly prevented from eating fruits and vegetables, which is required by state to be available for students.
Davies recently made a massive milestone in making all student lunches free, which makes this decision even more disappointing. We simply want to have lunch trays back. Our student body is being prevented from our legal right to fruit, vegetables, and milk by the choice to use these small paper dishes that we deserve to have.
