1 in 10 college students experience period poverty, a lack of access to menstrual products. 1/4 of all people who menstruate have struggled to afford these products at some point in the last year. An unstable access to this basic hygiene product causes stress and can interfere with a student's ability to perform well in school and daily activities. PeriodUM, a student led organization on campus, has taken great strides in gathering menstrual products and distributing them throughout campus bathrooms. However, PeriodUM relies on donations and volunteers to sustain the initiative. 

We are proposing that the University of Mississippi purchase and provide free menstrual products in the bathrooms on campus. The UM Mission Statement pledges to "provide opportunities...through excellence in learning, discovery, healthcare, and engagement." Providing basic hygiene items to students surely falls under this assurance. Just as the University provides other hygiene items, such as soap and toilet paper, to bathrooms across campus, the University should provide menstrual products as well.
