Provide for affordable housing in Noosa for workers and residents under $450 per week

The issue

Currently, Noosa residents, workers and businesses are suffering because of a lack of affordable housing. Workers are forced to either leave the shire and find work elsewhere or commute excessive distances to get to work in Noosa from where they live. The whole community is being disadvantaged by a lack of available, affordable housing that costs $450 a week or less.  The average rent across Noosa now tops $900 a week, and more than $1,100 a week for a home in Noosa Heads (source ABC News).

If this situation does not change, things will only get worse.  The whole community will suffer due to a shortage of accommodation suitable for workers to work and live in the shire.

Immediate action is needed as part of a proposed Southeast Queensland Regional Plan, to support more affordable housing when planning decisions are made. The SEQ Plan supports higher density, but it is important that this includes housing solutions within a price range affordable for Noosa workers.

The Noosa 450 campaign is a call to all levels of government, during the consultation period, to facilitate pathways for investment in affordable housing that costs $450 or less, a week to rent. The Noosa 450 campaign supports more affordable housing that is sustainable and that does not compromise Noosa’s community and environmental values.
