We want (fair!) community swim programs at Redwood High
The Issue
For over ten years, the TUHSD community education department has refused to provide community swim programs at Redwood High School, while both Tam High and Archie Williams have enjoyed year round, daily (morning, evening and weekend) community swim programs.
The Redwood community deserves fair and equitable community swim programming at our publicly funded, taxpayer-built pool facility.
For three years, the Town of Corte Madera has been subsidizing private firms to offer a summer community swim program at Redwood, since the TUHSD community education department has refused to do so, but this has been expensive, inadequate and unfair.
We, taxpayers living in the TUHSD district, hereby petition the Board of Trustees and its superintendent to direct the Community Education Department to set up and run the following at Redwood:
-- A daily and weekend morning (and/or evening) lap swim program (when pool is not in use by students.)
-- A recreational summer swim program, including swim lessons.
These programs should be comparable to the ongoing and very successful community swim programs at both Tam and AW.
At stake is our community's health and wellness, as well as our support for new tax measures in the district. The Marin Civil Grand Jury has reported on the need for more senior community programming. Swimming is an excellent form of healthy exercise for all ages. These types of programs tend to serve the underserved, including all those who cannot afford expensive private clubs. There is no reason why the Redwood community should be deprived of the type of excellent programs regularly offered at the district's other two high school swimming pools.
We, the undersigned, urge the TUHSD to immediately provide equitable community swim programming for the Redwood High School community. Thank you.
