Provide Covid vaccinations for all UK diabetics

The Issue

I became a type 1 diabetic instead of a type 2 diabetic because of Covid. This virus has been shown to severely damage the pancreas and makes individuals like myself more vulnerable to developing type 1 diabetes. Therefore, it is critical that all diabetics, regardless of age, have access to the Covid vaccination.

However, the current policy in the UK prevents diabetics under the age of 74 from receiving the vaccine, a cost-cutting measure that neglects the serious health risks posed by Covid to people with diabetes. This decision jeopardizes the health and welfare of countless individuals who are already at heightened risk from this virus.

Recent studies published in reputable medical journals have demonstrated the relationship between Covid and the deterioration of pancreatic function. According to a study from King's College London, individuals with diabetes are at a significantly increased risk of severe illness if they contract Covid. Moreover, the NHS cites that people with diabetes face a higher chance of complications from Covid, underscoring the urgent need for protective measures, such as vaccination.

The exclusion of any diabetic from the vaccination program is both dangerous and discriminatory. It disregards the medical advice and evidence urging protection for this vulnerable group. By prioritising savings over lives, the government leaves diabetics more susceptible to the damaging effects of this virus.

We call on the UK Government and NHS to urgently change this policy and extend access to the Covid vaccine to all diabetics, irrespective of age. Everyone deserves the right to be protected from this pandemic, especially those at increased risk due to medical conditions.

Please sign this petition to ensure all diabetics in the UK can receive the Covid vaccination and have the protection they need.
