Having faced the challenges of the visually impaired firsthand, I know the struggle of not being fully prepared for exams due to the lack of modified materials during mock exams. Before my Junior Cycle Maths exams, I was not adequately prepared because I didn't experience modified papers for my mocks. I assumed that diagrams or graphs would be removed in the modified papers, but they were not. This oversight cost me dearly, resulting in lost marks and knocking my confidence—a hurdle no student should have to endure.

Visual impairment should not be a barrier to education or success. Yet, for many students like me, the absence of modified exam papers during crucial preparatory phases makes it just that. Currently, schools provide standard mock exam papers, often omitting the necessary adaptations for those who require them. This means students who need modified versions to suit their visual needs are at a disadvantage even before they get to the State Exams. Without having had the opportunity to practice with adapted materials, the transition to the real exams can be daunting and unfairly skewed.

The solution is clear and achievable: make modified exam papers available in printed versions, just as standard exam papers are published by EDCO or Examinations.ie. Furthermore, provide modified versions of all mock exam papers to students entitled to use them in preparation for their State Exams. This approach will ensure all students have equitable access to education, leveling the playing field and allowing us to focus on demonstrating our knowledge and skills rather than battling an unnecessarily difficult exam environment.

Statistics show that students perform better when they are familiar with the exam format and material. Providing modified mock papers would enhance preparation, boost confidence, and improve outcomes for visually impaired students like me. It's time to advocate for equal educational resources and opportunities.
