Provide a safe alternative to Network Rail’s greenway closures in Kirklees

The Issue

Network Rail is closing the Birkby Bradley Greenway for 9 months and will be closing the Calder Valley Greenway at Colliery Bridge to work on The Transpennine Upgrade. These greenways are the only safe route for people on bicycles travelling between Huddersfield the north Kirklees towns.

People who cycle for transport will be forced to travel through the busy Colne Bridge junctions and mix with 40mph heavy traffic on Leeds Road. Despite recent surfacing works cycling on Leeds Road is still limited to unprotected cycle lanes which are frequently blocked by parked cars and the ongoing roadworks have no provision for cycling. This unsafe environment will make many people uncomfortable with travelling to and from Huddersfield and will force people into motor vehicles.

We call on Network Rail and Kirklees to provide safe alternative routes.
