Social workers make life-altering decisions that can result in children being permanently removed from their families. While many perform their duties with integrity, historical evidence reveals a devastating reality: there are documented cases of field reports being completely falsified, exaggerated, or misrepresented.

When a family is torn apart based on inaccurate reporting, the damage is irreversible. Because these critical interactions happen behind closed doors, vulnerable families are left entirely unprotected in disputes over what truly occurred during a visit.

The UK Government previously rejected calls for social workers to wear body cameras, arguing that the practice might hinder "trusted relationships." However, trust cannot exist without transparency. The proven history of falsified reports demonstrates that current professional standards and oversight are simply not enough. We need an objective, independent record of home and child interactions to ensure absolute truthfulness.

A child’s wishes and feelings are paramount in any safeguarding decision, yet their true voice is easily lost, altered, or distorted when filtered solely through a professional’s notes. By recording unaccompanied interviews, a child's exact words, tone, and context are permanently preserved. This guarantees their views are heard exactly as intended, protecting them from having their feelings skewed, misinterpreted, or deliberately misrepresented to fit a pre-existing narrative.

Our Demand

We are calling on the Government and local authorities to mandate that all social workers wear body-worn cameras during all home visits, and interviews with Children when unaccompanied by their Parents.

To ensure this serves as a robust safeguarding measure, the rules must be airtight:

 * Mandatory Recording: Introduce a strict mandate making body-worn cameras compulsory for all social workers during residential visits and any interviews conducted with a child away from their parents or guardians.

 * Tamper-Proof Technology: Social workers must not have the ability to switch the camera off, disable the connection, or selectively delete footage.

 * Zero Tolerance: Any failure to activate the camera or attempt to obscure the recording must result in immediate suspension pending a professional review.

A Win-Win for Families and Professionals

This mandate is a crucial preventative tool that protects everyone involved. For families, allowing agency professionals into a private residence is a massive concession of privacy, and they have a fundamental right to an objective record of those life-altering interactions.

Equally, this policy provides vital, equal protection for social workers. In the event of unfounded allegations or complaints made by parents or guardians, body-worn cameras offer an indisputable, objective record that exonerates dedicated professionals from false claims. It eliminates the "he-said, she-said" dynamic entirely.
