Protecting Genetic Diversity

The Issue

The Genetic Diversity Protection [DRAFT BILL] seeks to grant minority ethnic status to individuals with the MC1R gene, offering enhanced protection against bullying, harassment, and intimidation. In the UK, 9% of the population carries this gene, compared to just 2% worldwide.

Data reveals that 34% of children with the MC1R gene endure persistent peer bullying, while 19.1% face relentless online harassment from both known and unknown individuals. Discrimination affects 47.3-60.6% of these individuals in the UK, yet systemic denial by the government and inaction from local authorities have left victims with little recourse.

Without intervention, the prevalence of the MC1R gene in the UK could drop below 5% by 2060. Proactive measures now could save the NHS £15 million annually in psychological support costs for those impacted.
Please sign the petition to protect this vulnerable group and preserve a diminishing genetic trait.

Here you can find our draft bill giving a detailed explanation of why it should be implemented: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M_qLaWmJtpdZgQQa6x5KBfIFhcfcym-MJD68_rQPeyc/edit?usp=sharing

Our hope is that if GDPA passes, it can be expanded to protect other minority groups with rare genetic markers who face discrimination in daily life and face declining population.
