Protecting Billingooroo: A Call to Permanently Close Cable Beach to Vehicles

The issue

Disclaimer: The Djukun people are not seeking donations to protect Billingooroo. Their primary goal is to raise awareness and bring attention to important issues, such as the protection of the vulnerable flatback Goolibel turtle - in the Djukun language - at Billingooroo, which they feel strongly about. The Djukun people have chosen to pursue a petition on Change.org to amplify their voices and advocate for change.

If individuals feel moved to make a financial contribution, the Djukun people encourage them to first consider supporting not-for-profit organisations that are working diligently to protect the environment and create meaningful change.

Please note that any donations made on this page go directly to Change.org to help promote the petition, allowing more people to see and support it. These funds do not go to the Djukun people or the protection efforts for Billingooroo.

Petition: Protecting Billingooroo - A Call to Permanently Close Cable Beach to Vehicles

Cable Beach is not just a stunning tourist destination; it is Billingooroo, a sacred site for the Djukun people. This beach is where the vulnerable flatback goolibel (turtles) return to lay their eggs, and vehicle access is devastating their fragile ecosystem. The Djukun people are calling for a permanent closure of the vehicle ramp at Cable Beach to protect both the environment and their cultural heritage.

Allowing vehicles to drive on Billingooroo is not only damaging the environment but also showing a lack of respect for the Djukun people’s cultural connections. The compacted sand from vehicle traffic is severely limiting the survival rate of flatback goolibel hatchlings, and the vibrations from the vehicles threaten the eggs, reducing successful hatches.

The Shire of Broome has suggested a temporary closure during flatback goolibel nesting season, but this is not enough. The Djukun people are demanding a permanent closure to ensure the long-term protection of Billingooroo. This petition is a call for action to respect the Djukun people’s rights to preserve their sacred site, and protect the fragile ecosystem of Billingooroo.

Let us come together to protect this precious environment for the flatback goolibel and honour the Djukun people’s connection to their sacred land. Sign this petition to support the permanent closure of the Cable Beach vehicle ramp. Let’s ensure that Billingooroo remains a place of cultural and environmental significance for generations to come.

How can you help? Sign this petition to help support a permanent closure of the Cable Beach vehicle ramp. Then, share it with others.
