Protect Young Lives in Isla Vista: Enhance Safety Measures at Dangerous Cliffsites
The Issue
On September 2nd, 2023, our close friend Benny Schurmer tragically lost his life due to a fall at the unsafe, low-fenced cliffsides in Isla Vista. Benny was a joyful, talented, loving individual with a bright future ahead of him, that was unfairly cut short and has left an irreplaceable void in our lives. This devastating incident marks the 13th fatality resulting from cliff falls since 1994.
Isla Vista is a community located in Santa Barbara that houses many — predominantly composed of students (both attending UCSB and SBCC), and borders the ocean with cliff-sides that have threatened the safety of students and visitors alike for decades now. These cliffs pose significant risks to public safety due to inadequate infrastructure and insufficient warning systems.
We believe it is crucial to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies like this one. By signing this petition, we urge local authorities and relevant stakeholders to implement the following measures:
1. Install Portable Restrooms: The absence of accessible restrooms along the cliffsides forces individuals to venture closer to dangerous areas while seeking facilities elsewhere. By providing portable restrooms near popular viewpoints, we can minimize unnecessary risks and ensure public convenience.
2. Enhance Fencing Infrastructure: Low fences currently line the dangerous cliffsites in Isla Vista, posing a serious hazard for unsuspecting individuals or those who may lose their balance accidentally. We demand higher fences that act as effective barriers against accidental falls while still preserving scenic views.
3. Advocate for Safety and Caution: Larger and clearer warning signs must be prominently displayed along dangerous areas of Isla Vista's cliffsites. These signs should emphasize the potential dangers associated with venturing too close or engaging in risky behaviors near cliff edges.
By implementing these safety measures promptly, we can protect young lives from avoidable accidents at Isla Vista's treacherous cliffsites. Our community deserves to enjoy these natural wonders without fearing for their safety.
We call upon the local authorities, including the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors and Isla Vista Recreation and Park District, to prioritize public safety by allocating resources towards these essential enhancements. Together, we can prevent further tragedies and ensure that no more lives are lost due to preventable accidents. We know there are authorities and representatives working to take action on these measures, but we ask the community to assist us in advocating for more.
Let us honor Benny's memory by taking proactive steps towards safeguarding our community's well-being. Sign this petition today and join us in demanding a safer Isla Vista for all.
