Protect Yelland Orchard and Community Play Area from the Developers
The Issue
For many years, our cherished orchard and play area has been more than just a plot of land; it has been the heart of our community—a lovely place to escape where generations, young and old, meet to relax, play, and find peace away from the bustle of daily life. We celebrate the seasons, gather for harvest festivals, commemorate Remembrance Day, and collect apples. More than a physical asset, it is a spiritual haven where local and non-local residents alike come to rest and recharge.
Unfortunately, our Orchard and Play Area is under threat. Developers plan to destroy it for an access road to a new housing development. In doing so, we risk losing a designated open space that has also been officially registered as an Asset of Community Value. This isn't just about losing greenery; it is about erasing memories, traditions, and a beautiful space for our community.
The orchard and play area offer a sanctuary of tranquillity that benefits the well-being of everyone who visits. Evidence supports the fact that green spaces significantly contribute to mental health, providing a vital retreat from urban life. According to the World Health Organization, access to green space can reduce health inequalities, improve well-being, and aid in the treatment of mental illness. Our orchard is not just a convenience; it’s a necessity.
We understand the need for development and the housing crisis that many communities face. However, there should be alternative solutions that do not involve sacrificing our vital community resources. We propose that local authorities and developers consider alternative access routes or locations that preserve the integrity of our orchard and play area. By doing so, we conserve our environment while still accommodating the need for new housing.
Join us in urging our local government to reconsider the current development plans and explore solutions that preserve our orchard and play area. We need your support to protect the legacy of our community for current and future generations. Please sign our petition to save this precious sanctuary so it continues to thrive as a place of joy, reflection, and community for many years to come. Together, we can make a difference.
