Protect Wyandotte Students with Paid Crossing Guards

The Issue

Every day of every school year, after school, some if not most parents hold their breath as their children cross the streets of Wyandotte to get home safely.  What should be a simple walk home has become worrying and unsafe. We’ve already seen students struck by vehicles, and too many more have come dangerously close. This is not a “rare incident.” It’s a pattern… one that we, as a community, cannot ignore any longer.

The problem is clear: our schools don’t have enough crossing guards to protect students during arrival/dismissal. The current system depends on volunteers, and while we’re grateful to those who step up, it simply isn’t enough. Volunteer coverage is unreliable, not coordinated well and many key intersections go unmonitored when traffic is at its worst.

We’ve heard the district say that paid crossing guard positions are “not in the budget.”, but child safety is not optional. A budget should never be an excuse when lives are at risk, especially the lives of children.

Our students deserve better. Parents deserve peace of mind knowing their children can get home safely. This is not a luxury, it’s a basic responsibility of our school district and city leadership.

We, the undersigned, are calling for the Wyandotte Public School District to:

▪️Create and fund paid crossing guard positions at high-traffic intersections near each school.

▪️Prioritize dismissal hours, when most accidents and close calls occur.

▪️Work with city officials or police if needed to ensure consistent and trained supervision at every critical crossing point.

▪️Stop treating safety as an afterthought and start treating it as the essential duty it is.

No parent should have to fear that their child might not make it home from school because there wasn’t a crossing guard there to stop a car.

No superintendent or board member should be able to sleep easy knowing preventable accidents continue to happen year after year.

We demand action now, before another family is forced to experience the unthinkable.

Please sign and share this petition to tell Wyandotte Schools that the safety of our children is not “out of budget.”

Every child’s life matters. Let’s stand together to make our schools safe again, before it’s too late.
