Protect Women’s Safety: Enact Stronger Laws to Prevent Violence in Public Spaces

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on the U.S. government to enact stronger laws to ensure women’s safety in public spaces. This urgent call to action follows the recent tragic murder of Laken Riley, a young college woman who was attacked and killed while out for a run in broad daylight.

Laken’s death is not an isolated incident—it is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers women face daily while performing routine activities like jogging, walking, or commuting. It is unacceptable that in 2024, women continue to live in fear of violence in public spaces.

Our Demands:

 1. Increased Public Safety Measures:

 • Federal funding for better lighting, emergency call stations, and surveillance systems in parks, trails, and urban areas.

 2. Harsher Penalties for Violent Crimes Against Women:

 • Uniformly strict consequences for gender-based violence to deter such crimes.

 3. National Prevention and Education Programs:

 • Implementation of educational campaigns to combat gender-based violence and empower communities to intervene.

 4. Legislative Support for Victim Protection:

 • Federally funded programs for self-defense training and resources to ensure women’s safety in public.

Laken Riley’s tragic story cannot become just another statistic. Her life, like so many others, was stolen due to senseless violence. It is time for our lawmakers to act to honor her memory and ensure that women across the United States can live their lives without fear.

By signing this petition, you join us in demanding that Congress take immediate action to create safer public spaces and protect women from violence.

Together, we can make a change. Let’s ensure no other family suffers the devastating loss of a loved one like Laken Riley.
