The Issue

In 2023, Barbie movie asked the fundamental question, "What was I made for?”. The answer to that quest is also often advertised to us in our college experience. It is labels as the one place where our “real life begins, true friendships, possibly a future partner, and ultimately a degree which  fuels us towards our purpose. I also had the same drive when I first transferred to Sacramento State with a scholarship to work at the State Capitol. But, after surviving a few violent and sexual encounters in my past, I decided abuse was not something that I was made for.

So, I am launching a petition to create a Campus Protection Act so students are not just physically, but also emotionally safe. I firmly believe nobody deserves to live in constant fear, especially women.  Another male student on campus was making verbal death threats against my life, such as "I will burn you alive, and boil you in hot water". I eventually reached my breaking point and filed a complaint against him. My university responded by stating that since he had not gotten violent with me, there was no issue and that he was utilizing his "freedom of speech" rights. But, freedom of speech, does not mean freedom to emotionally violate, harm, and abuse another human being.

Currently, Title IX, does not protect anyone from verbal death threats. I had to take my abuser to court to find justice, an experience which I left me further traumatized. But, your campus should not be putting you in a dilemma where you tolerate being around someone who is impacting your mental health. I am advocating for a safe and inclusive campus environment, urgently submit this petition to call for an expansion of Title IX, and to address civil harassment as a component of sexual assault. I, call upon the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights to take action in expanding Title IX protections and establishing the Campus Protection Act. I am committed to working collaboratively to ensure that students can attend their institutions peacefully and without the fear of being threatened or bullied.

Please, sign this petition and support this vital matter to keep student safe on campus without having to seek a court order.

Thank you
