Resolution for animal cruelty whistleblower’s case
Jun 5, 2015 — Hello!
We have some news for you. Amber Canavan, the whistleblower accused of felony burglary and petit larceny at a foie gras factory farm in New York has resolved her case!
As part of a plea deal, those quite serious charges have been dropped and Amber plead guilty to misdemeanor trespass. This means instead of facing up to seven years in prison, she is currently scheduled to spend one month in jail.
As shocking as that still is to many people, the political climate in this particular part of New York is very much influenced by ties to the agriculture industry so it is a positive step. Our key goal of the petition, dropping those initial charges, has been achieved after nearly 100,000 people came together to sign our petition!
We are certainly hoping the Governor commutes the sentence because it’s a waste of taxpayer dollars to put Amber in jail now for simply trespassing.
Here are three ways you can continue to help Amber:
1) Very politely please call the Governor’s office. Go to https://www.governor.ny.gov/contact and choose 'Other' for the Topic. You can simply say “I heard about the case of Amber Canavan who is facing jail time for a misdemeanor trespass charge in Sullivan County. My understanding is she was trying to protect abused animals so I hope the Governor will commute her sentence.”
2) We still have significant costs to cover. You can: Make a tax deductible donation by choosing "Animal Cruelty Investigator Legal Defense" at www.aprl.org/contribute.html or purchase a legal defense fund baseball tee from Amber https://www.etsy.com/listing/233632257/liberation-is-love-legal-defense-fund
