Protect Vulnerable Wildlife at Centennial Park by Installing CCTV Cameras

Protect Vulnerable Wildlife at Centennial Park by Installing CCTV Cameras
The issue
Animals in Centennial Park are being deliberately harmed, and there is little to stop it from happening again. Wildlife in the park is trusting and defenceless, especially around the ponds where illegal fishing and cruelty have already occurred. Installing CCTV cameras would help deter abuse, hold offenders accountable, and protect animals who cannot protect themselves. This petition calls for immediate action to safeguard the vulnerable wildlife of Centennial Park.
Centennial Park is a place of natural beauty and a sanctuary for wildlife. It is home to fish, ducks, geese, and other animals who are accustomed to the presence of people and therefore particularly vulnerable to harm.
Recently, a serious incident of animal cruelty occurred in the park involving teenagers illegally fishing, violently mistreating a large carp, and attempting to chase and strike ducks and geese with fishing rods. Despite fishing being illegal in the park and rangers having previously spoken to the individuals, they were not removed and continued to move through the park, posing an ongoing risk to animals. The injured fish later died after prolonged suffering. There have been many other instances of illegal fishing and violence towards animals that reside in the park.
These incidents highlights a critical issue: there is currently no effective deterrent or accountability for animal cruelty occurring in the park, particularly around the ponds where animals are most exposed and trusting of humans.
CCTV cameras would:
• Act as a strong deterrent against animal abuse and illegal activities such as fishing
• Allow identification of offenders so they can be held accountable
• Support rangers and law enforcement in responding appropriately and promptly
• Help protect vulnerable wildlife who cannot protect themselves
• Increase public safety and confidence for park visitors
Even a limited number of cameras focused specifically around pond areas would make a meaningful difference.
Animals in Centennial Park rely entirely on humans to do the right thing. When cruelty occurs, they have no voice and no way to escape. It is our responsibility to ensure this park is a safe environment for all living beings within it.
We respectfully urge Centennial Park management to install CCTV cameras around the ponds as a preventative and protective measure against animal cruelty.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for the welfare of animals and helping ensure Centennial Park remains a place of care, respect, and safety.
