SPrKL board members enjoyed meeting with VegPro in their lettuce processing facility. It's an impressive facility and a valuable contributor to regional agriculture. It was interesting to learn about VegPro's use of cover crops to keep dust down and precision timing of sprinklers to moderate irrigation flows.

As an NGO, SPrKL has no technical expertise and cannot evaluate septic system plans. We look forward to learning more about the professional review process by Interior Health as plans evolve for the VegPro septic systems for additional temporary farm works. Hosting so many people on septic so near a source of drinking water presents a risk and a challenge, as recognized by Greater Vernon Water. We appreciate that VegPro is responsive to the concept of improving septic system design and location.

Ultimately, it is much less expensive overall to protect water quality from the start rather than deal with the consequences of increased pollution downstream. We appreciate the commitment of Greater Vernon Water to protecting our drinking water and our lake. We also appreciate all the concern and support for protecting Kalamalka Lake expressed by those who signed the petition. It is important that the Province recognize their ultimate responsibility for protecting drinking water quality, even if some up front cost is involved with independent review of large projects by qualified professionals.
