PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF FIT PARENTS
The Issue
I never imagined I would find myself fighting to protect my rights as a parent. Like most mothers, I believed that if you love your child, provide for them, and do what’s best for them, your voice would matter.
However, I’ve learned that isn’t always the case. I’ve sat in a courtroom where my decisions as a fit parent were questioned—not because I was deemed unfit, but because others disagreed with me. I’ve watched as emotion, opinion, and circumstance were given weight alongside the rights that are supposed to be protected by law. It was a stark realization that our judicial system sometimes allows personal views to cloud the objective judgment that is essential in such matters.
Across the country, fit parents are experiencing similar situations, facing court-ordered visitations that undermine their parental authority. Grandparent visitation laws, intended to balance family dynamics, sometimes overreach and compromise the fundamental rights of parents—especially when these laws are applied in cases involving the family of a deceased parent.
The cornerstone of our society and legal structure is that fit parents have the constitutional right to make decisions for their children without undue interference. Yet, the existing grandparent visitation statutes often allow courts to override such rights, granting visitation based on judicial discretion rather than on what the law mandates or respects parental autonomy.
This petition seeks meaningful reform to grandparent visitation laws, ensuring that constitutional rights of fit parents are honored and upheld. Lawmakers should prioritize adjustments to these laws that ensure judicial discretion does not misstep the bounds of what is legally and fundamentally right. While grandparents undeniably have an important role, this should not come at the cost of diminishing a fit parent's voice.
To better serve our families and protect parental rights, we need legislative reform that ensures the rights of fit parents are not reduced or ignored. By signing this petition, you stand with me and many others in advocating for laws that rightly balance family dynamics while upholding parental authority. Our goal is to ensure fair judicial application of these laws and to protect the right and ability of fit parents to guide their children's futures without unwarranted interference. Please sign this petition to support this much-needed change.
