A model from the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, showing that if Copperwood's tailings dam ruptures, mine waste would reach Lake Superior "within minutes."
We’ve just learned that State Appropriations Committees will soon be voting on the Michigan Strategic Fund grant.
That’s right: that previously approved $50M handout of taxpayer revenue to a foreign extractive company on Michigan soil is not a done deal until it passes through the House and the Senate. That's why we are asking that every single person reading this message write to the Appropriations Committees and demand a rejection of the grant TODAY. You will find all Committee email addresses at the bottom of this message.
The Senate Appropriations meeting is on June 6th, but we don't yet know about the House, so please write your letter as soon as possible.
All you need to do is copy and paste the list into the To: field of an e-mail, give a strong subject line which communicates the entirety of your point (like, “REJECT THE COPPERWOOD GRANT!”), then speak your heart for a paragraph or two and click send.
Let’s remember what’s at stake: Copperwood would be right next to the North Country Trail; it would mine beneath Porcupine Mountains State Park; but most alarmingly, since 98.55% of what comes out of the ground would be waste, Copperwood would require erecting the closest metallic sulfide waste facility to Lake Superior in history.
The image you see at the beginning of this message is a model recently released by the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission showing exactly what would occur if there were to be a rupture in the west side of Copperwood’s proposed waste facility: the waste would reach Lake Superior “within minutes.” (page 151)
Water comprises 99% of the molecules in your body, a fact joining you to every other lifeform. Will we sit back and passively watch as our so-called “leaders” vote to approve a massive threat to the largest freshwater sea on Earth? Or will we fight back in the name of Water and Life?
This is not a TV show. This is not a drill. We need your help, and we need it now.
In solidarity,
Tom Grotewohl
