Emília Costa, with the Campaign in Defense of the Brazilian Savanna

Hello everyone! First, I want to thank you all for the support you’ve given our campaign so far. Your encouragement has been fundamental to the defense of the Cerrado.

Second, I have some great news: the National Campaign in Defense of the Cerrado went to Brazil’s national congress last month and delivered more than half a million signatures to the Chamber of Deputies.

The petition was delivered to the president of the Environmental Committee, Deputy Rodrigo Agostinho, as well as Deputies Fernanda Melchionna and Nilto Tatto, also members of the same commission.

In addition, more than 570 million signatures were delivered to members of parliament during the opening of the 9th Meeting of the People of the Cerrado, including Talíria Petrone, Sâmia Bonfim, Joênia Wapichana and Edmilson Rodrigues (see photos). Even the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia, received the signatures!

The voices of indigenous people, descendants of runaway slaves, and traditional river communities were uplifted and heard thanks to your support!

This was a huge step, and significant Brazilian media outlets covered the delivery, including Congresso em Foco, CartaCapital and Catraca Livre.

But it’s crucial that we continue to pressure members of the Congress so that they vote to make the Cerrado a National Heritage Site!

Please continue sharing the petition, and keep up with our work by liking our Facebook page and following us on Instagram.

Thank you,
Emília Costa
